Monroe Coalition

The Monroe County Substance Abuse Coalition was established in May of 2006 as an endorsed workgroup of the Monroe County Human Services Collaborative Network and has 50 active members, representing all community sectors. Since its inception, the Coalition has:

Three overarching goals were established:

  1. Develop an environment that will decrease substance use and abuse among Monroe County residents, especially youth, and increase protective factors in the community.
  2. Increase service capacity for substance abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment.
  3. Increase accessibility to substance abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment services.

Drug abuse is a serious problem for youth in Monroe County. The five most frequently used drugs were alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, stimulants, and inhalants. These five were also the “favorites” nationally, however, it should be noted that the rates of use in four out of five drug categories were higher in Monroe County than national averages.
